Ceramic Dental Crowns – San Luis Obispo, CA

Advanced Repair for Growing Smiles

What is a Dental Crown?

Unlike a filling, which only replaces a small portion of a decayed tooth, a dental crown covers the entire outside of the tooth, giving it protection and strength. Also sometimes called a cap, the specific dental crown we use for permanent teeth is made of completely metal-free ceramic, which is shaded to resemble the surrounding teeth. In other words, the prosthetic shouldn’t stand out and should restore total function.

The Dental Crown Process

If your child requires this more advanced restoration, we’ll follow these steps to give them a ceramic dental crown:

  • First, we numb the area with a local anesthetic. It feels just like getting a cavity filled.
  • Then, we either remove the decayed or damaged structure or prepare the tooth by removing a small bit of enamel around the entire thing.
  • We’ll take impressions of your child’s upper and lower teeth and send these impressions to our lab.
  • Before you leave, a temporary crown will be attached to the tooth to protect it while the custom one is created.
  • When the lab has finished fabricating the crown, you and your child will return to have it bonded in place.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

When you were a child, you may have seen or had metallic crowns, but we take advantage of cutting-edge materials and provide all-ceramic ones. This durable, realistic material allows our young patients to still have a natural-looking smile while treating decay or injury.

In many situations, such as after a deep cavity or fracture, a dental crown preserves the majority of the real tooth underneath, which might otherwise need to be extracted. As a result, your child can avoid premature tooth loss and keep the tooth healthy, strong, and functional.
